To assist with the growth of the eggs throughout this procedure, medication is given. This is given for a period of 5 to 10 days and can take the form of oral or injectable hormones.
Serial ultrasounds are now performed to assess follicular size and rupture. A trigger injection is given to promote ovulation once the follicle or a few follicles have grown and matured.
The couple is subsequently counselled to have timed intercourse or, in some situations, undergo an IUI. Treatment normally lasts between 10 and 15 days and starts on Day 2 or 3 of the period.
